Two different positions: bunched and retroflexed

  • Bunched: Slide the tongue up and back with the sides of the tongue pushing on the inside of the upper molars (large back teeth) with voice on.

  • Retroflex: Lift the tongue tip and roll it back slightly (like your tongue is sitting up in a chair) without the tip making contact with the palate, and back sides of the tongue touch upper molars.

Elicitation Tips

  • Produce /a/ and keep tongue elevated while bringing teeth close together to shape placement for bunched /r/
  • Produce /i/ and keep tongue elevated while bringing teeth close together to shape placement for bunched /r/
  • Use “karla” or “eureka” target words to assist with lingual placement
  • Alternate between bunched and retroflex /r/ positions to determine which is more natural for the child
